Jordan Oliver vs Zain Retherford
The rematch is finally going down at 65 kg. This month in Cedar Rapids at the U.S. Cellular Center will feature the matchup wrestling fans have been anxious to see for over a year. A rematch between Jordan Oliver and Zain Retherford at AWL I to settle a score that goes back to the 2017 World Team Trials process.
At the time things were looking up for Oliver. The 65 kg roadblock that was Brent Metcalf had finally moved on from competing and transitioned into coaching, opening the door for a new era for the weight. After making the National Team three out of four years it was his time to shine. And he looked the part too.
At the 2017 U.S. Open Oliver defeated Retherford 5-3, and then 2016 Olympic representative Frank Molinaro 4-4 criteria in the finals. Things were finally going his way, but a positive test for banned substance from USADA derailed all of that, slapping Oliver with a 12 month ban.
That led to another wrestler finding his breakout, as Retherford claimed the U.S. World Team spot and competed at the Senior World Championships. Last year Retherford was absent from competition as he adapted to the new weigh in structure.
We will never know who would have come out on top of that 2107 World Team bracket had both Oliver and Retherford been present, but on November 30th fans will be presented with the second installment of what could a strong rivalry for our country's 2019 and 2020 World/Olympic team spot.
